Who Are School Counselors?
What Does An Elementary School Counselor Do?
Some examples of what a school counselor does:
*Promotes positive attitudes among students toward self, family, peers, and community.
*Develops and delivers classroom guidance lessons that teach skills that promote student success in school and in their future endeavors.
*Provides support during a personal crisis.
*Coordinates referrals to outside agencies.
*Helps to create a safe and positive learning experience.
How Can Students See the School Counselor?
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling can be requested by teachers, administrators, other staff, parents, and students. Students in grades K-5 can request to meet with the school counselor by completing the counselor's request form. For younger students, their teacher can help them complete the form. Individual counseling is short term (usually no more than 6 sessions). If additional counseling or outside counseling is needed, the school counselor can provide a resource list of outside agencies in the area.
Small Group Counseling
Small groups are offered throughout the school year based on the needs of the students. Students can be referred for small group counseling by their parent/guardian, teacher or administrator.
Classroom Guidance/Large Group Counseling
Each class has guidance once a month during their Enrichment Schedule. Guidance lessons will focus on topics such as growth mindset and goal-setting, managing emotions, empathy and kindness, and problem-solving skills.
The School Counselor at Virginia Williamson also serves as the 504 and IST Coordinator.
