First Grade Teachers

We are excited to start a new year in 1st grade! We know we will have a wonderful fun filled year. We look forward to spending time with the students and getting to know our new 1st grade friends! The information below consists of two parts: general information and our behavior policy. Please read over the information carefully. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. Students will have homework Monday through Thursday evening. Students need to read 20 minutes each night as part of homework. Students will have a reading log to record their reading this year. Reading logs are due at the end of each month. Students that turn in a completed reading log will receive a prize! Students may read either independently or with someone else. Students will begin their reading log Tuesday, September 3rd.
Also, throughout the week, students should study for their spelling test. Spelling words for the week will be sent home the first day of each school week. The students have the rest of the week to study for their spelling test (typically on Fridays). There will be a spelling test at the end of each week when we have 4 or 5 days in a week. Since students did not have spelling tests in Kindergarten, we will start with a practice spelling test the first full week of school for students to adjust to taking spelling tests.
Absences/Tardies
If your child misses school, please send in a note explaining the absence on the day they return. A note is the only way to have an absence excused. If you do not send in a note, the absence will be marked unexcused by the office.
Students may be dropped off at school beginning at 8:15, and students may begin coming down the hall at 8:30 a.m. each morning. Students are marked tardy at 8:45 a.m. It is important that students arrive to class on time, so they can begin completing their morning work. Also, it is important that students stay the entire school day, so they do not fall behind or miss instruction. Instruction takes place right up to the end of the school day.

1. Rainbow Write! Write your words and sentences with different colors.

Folders
Your child will receive a daily folder. They should take this folder home and return it each day. This folder holds everything the students and parents need to keep updated on classroom and school events! I will also included resources that will be helpful for you as parents to correlate your child’s learning at school to his/her learning at home along with other useful reference items.

Grading System
Students in first grade will receive the following as grades on report cards. Your child will receive grades for reading, communication skills (which includes writing, spelling, grammar, and handwriting), math, science, social studies, and conduct.
1st Grade Grading System:
S=Satisfactory
N=Needs improvement
U=Unsatisfactory

Change of Transportation
Anytime your child will have a change in transportation, please send in a note stating the child’s full name, teacher name, and change that morning. If you realize that you have forgotten to send a note, please email the school right away and let them know about the change. The office will then let me know of the change. We cannot take a child’s word of a change in transportation and will send him/her their regular way home if we have not heard from you.

Money/Notes/forms
Many times throughout the year you will be sending in money for various things (lunch, pictures, fundraisers, book order etc.). It is very important that any money sent in should be places in the zipper pouch in your child’s folder. The money should be labeled with its purpose. If money is not labeled it will be sent back. Please do not send money in your child pocket, book bag, or hand it to me in the morning. This also applies to any notes or forms being sent to school. Please place all items in your child’s folder in the designated spot. Mornings can be a very hectic time and when a parent or student comes in and hands me money or a note is can get lost easily.
